Abstract:
The object of this invention is to provide a cigarette filter, containing both pine resin and an alkaline, anhydrous phase of calcium chloride suitable for absorbing and removing harmful substances from the smoke of a cigarette while a person smokes the cigarette. Particularly, the cigarette filter of this invention effectively filters off nicotine and tar from the smoke. The cigarette filter of this invention also protects the bronchus due to a pharmacological action of the pine resin on consumption and asthma. In the present invention, such an addition of pine resin and alkaline, anhydrous phase of calcium chloride into the cigarette filter is accomplished by adding powdered or granule pine resin and powdered or granule alkaline, anhydrous phase of calcium chloride into a conventional cigarette filter. This cigarette filter thus effectively removes the harmful substances from the smoke of a cigarette through an absorption process while a person smokes a cigarette. The cigarette filter of this invention desirably protects the bronchus of a smoking person by the aromaticity of the pine resin.

TOBACCO FILTER WITH USE OF PINE RESIN & SODIUM CHLORIDE TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates, generally, to a tobacco filter and, in particular, to a tobacco filter containing pine resin and calcium chloride, in which pine resin, and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phase are applied so as to adsorb and remove harmful matter included in tobacco smoke during inhalation.

PRIOR ART Generally, when persons smoke, oxides such as nicotine, tar and so on, are created. Once such oxides are inhaled into the human body, diseases including phthisis and lung cancer are caused. As well, the oxides are known as the cause of many diseases because the oxides absorbed to the mouth, the nose, the bronchi and the gastric mucosa, accelerate a secretion of adrenaline in bloods, followed by contraction of blood vessels.

Conventionally, various methods for filtering harmful gases and matter, such as nicotine and tar, generated from inhalation, have been devised. In this regard, active charcoal or zeolite which is a porous adsorbent, is added between the filter and the tobacco so that nicotine, tar, etc., among those matters harmful to the human body, are effectively adsorbed and reduced. However, hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and the like, are not nearly adsorbed.

Further, when inhaled, harmless ingredients which give flavor to the tobacco are adsorbed and removed, along with the harmful matter, whereby palatability of the tobacco is lowered.

In addition, silica gel, a porous adsorbent, may be added to tobacco.

Because silica gel has a large pore diameter, nicotine or tar is effectively adsorbed

but harmful matter of gas phases are not collected within the fine voids and thus diffused allowing them to pass through a filter, whereby the adsorption rate for harmful gaseous matter is less than desired. Also, since silica gel itself shows hydrophilic property and thus adsorbs moisture in the tobacco smoke during inhalation, the smoker feels dryness. Hence, these methods have not been used in recent years.

Alternatively, there have recently been developed tobacco filters which are added with materials providing a deodorization function and an aromatic property.

For instance, Korean Patent Laid-Open No. 88-10704 discloses a tobacco filter using a ginseng foil, in which the ginseng foil is by-produced when a concentrated ginseng extract is obtained, dried and crushed into a powder, after which this ginseng powder is added to a tobacco filter made of acetate or paper, thereby removing odors in the mouth. Further, Korean Patent Laid-Open No. 95-24708 refers to a tobacco filter containing green tea, wherein various green-tea powders are added to a tobacco filter to remove odors in the mouth. Furthermore, Korean Utility Model Laid-Open No. 97-11847 refers to a bamboo-salt tobacco filter, in which bamboo-salt particles (0.1-0.5 mm) 0.1-0.5 g are used to form a layer of bamboo-salt particles, whereby harmful matters in the tobacco smoke are removed and taste of tobacco becomes mild.

DISCLOSURE OF THE PRESENT INVENTION To alleviate the problems as described above, it is an object of the present invention to provide a tobacco filter through which nicotine and tar are removed from tobacco-smoke which has the medicinal function of protecting the bronchi from tobacco smoke-caused cough and asthma during inhalation.

To achieve the object of the present invention, a tobacco filter containing pine resin and calcium chloride is provided in which pine resin and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases in powder form or granules are applied so as to effectively adsorb harmful matters occurring during inhalation and to protect the bronchi by virtue of the aromatic properties of pine resin included in the filter.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS A tobacco filter with use of pine resin and sodium chloride of the present invention is characterized in that pine resin and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases in powder form are applied to the fibrous filter, or a separate filter layer comprising said components in granule form is inserted into the fibrous filter.

Pine resin is a resin from an essential oil in a gluey liquid state secreted from the stem of pine trees, and comprises phellandrene, terpene alcohol (C, oH, 602), tency pimaric acid (C40H6002), palustric acid and so on. Pine resin has excellent adhesivity and aromatic properties. Further, it is known that a sterilization function and an anti-inflammatory function of pine resin cause chronic bronchitis and rheumatic neuralgia to be effectively treated.

Calcium chloride, a colorless cubic crystal, is industrially produced by an ammonia-soda process or by a solvey process. In addition, it can be sourced from sun-dried salt obtained from seawater. It is known that such calcium chloride heated at 300 °C generates calcium chloride (CaC12) and two molecules of water (2H2O), which are converted into alkaline anhydrides upon heating at 500 °C or higher.

Therefore, calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases has good hygroscopicity and dustproofing, and thus is used as siding for freezers, a dustproofing agent on road surface and a blending agent in drying agents.

In the present invention, such pine resin and calcium chloride are applied to the tobacco filter by powdering or granulating pine resin and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases. As such, pine resin and calcium chloride may be mixed or separately added.

When the powdered pine resin and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases are applied to the fibrous filter, it can adsorb and remove not only nicotine and tar by virtue of the adhesivity of pine resin from tobacco smoke, but harmful gases, such as hydrogen cyanide by virtue of the hygroscopicity of calcium chloride upon inhalation of smoke.

These effects can be also achieved when pine resin and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases are used in granule form in order for tobacco smoke to smoothly pass through the filter layer. In this case, a separate filter layer consisting of the granules may be intercalated into the fibrous filter.

In a procedure of preparing a tobacco fibrous filter, the fibrous filter is subjected to coating after pine resin or calcium chloride is dissolved into water.

This case has also the same effect as described above.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY As described above, pine resin shows superior adhesivity and is known to be useful in the treatment of chronic bronchitis due to its sterilization and anti- inflammatory functions and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases shows excellent endothermicity and hygroscopicity, and prominent dustproofing effects.

With all of these properties, the tobacco filter of the present invention, which incorporates pine resin and calcium chloride of alkaline anhydride phases therein, can surely filter and remove harmful ingredients of tobacco, such as nicotine, tar and hydrogen cyanide, and thus is helpful in keeping the health of the smoker, as well as allowing the smoker to feel normal during inhalation, which results from the aroma of the pine resin incorporated in the filter.

The present invention has been described in an illustrative manner, and it is to be understood that the terminology used is intended to be in the nature of description rather than of limitation. Many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. Therefore, it is to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described.
