A vehicle alternator comprises a Lundell-type rotor and a stator. The Lundell-type rotor has: a cylinder portion (112a) around which a field coil (12) is wound; a pair of plate-like end plate portions (112b) disposed at both axial end surfaces of the cylinder portion (112a) so as to face each other; a plurality of claw portions (112c) extending in parallel with a rotational axis from one of the end plate portions (112b) toward the other end plate portion direction; and a plurality of claw portions (112c) extending in parallel with the rotational axis from the other one of the end plate portions (112b) toward the one end plate portion direction and disposed alternately with the claw portions (112c) in a circumferential direction. The stator is disposed so as to face the Lundell-type rotor on the outer circumferential side thereof and with a rotational gap thereto and has a laminated iron core around which an armature coil is wound. In the vehicle alternator, the inter-claw pole gap size between the adjacent first and second claw portions is set within a predetermined optimum gap range including the inter-claw pole gap size that maximizes the output current.
