Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the photocatalytic efficiency of titaniumoxide and to prolong adsorption and decomposition cycles by holding the photocatalyst fine particles, which support the hyper-fine metal particles, on the surface of the base material. SOLUTION: The highly functional base material has such fundamental constitution that the photocatalyst fine particles supporting the hyperfine metal particles are held on the surface of the base material. The hyperfine metal particles have a particle size of 1-10 nm, in which size, a quantum size effect may be exhibited, and are supported in an amount more than about 100 particles on the surface of one photocatalyst fine particle. The suitable substance as hyperfine metal particle is a transition metal, preferably Pt or Ag, etc. The suitable substance as the photocatalyst fine particle is a metal oxide semiconductor, which has the ability to form hydroxy radical and/or super oxide anion when it is irradiated with ultraviolet, ray preferably, titanium oxide. The suitable material as the holding base material is a fiber as one dimensional material, preferably active carbon fiber.
