To provide a method that does not need to supply a reagent or gas for oxidation or reduction into the molten salt of a chloride, in a process of adjusting a valence of dissolved ions in the molten salt of the chloride, which can take a plurality of valences, does not cause the turbidity of the molten salt due to dissolution of an electrode material in the molten salt of the chloride and the contamination due to other ions than dissolved ions, efficiently electrolytically oxidizes or reduces the dissolved ions, and precisely adjusts the valence of the dissolved ions in the molten salt of the chloride; and to provide an apparatus therefor.
This valence-adjusting method comprises immersing a working electrode 1 into the molten salt 3 of the chloride including the dissolved ions which can take a plurality of valences, through a diaphragm 4a made of a high-temperature conductive material, and simultaneously immersing a counter electrode 2 into the molten salt through a diaphragm 4b made of the high-temperature conductive material; applying DC voltage between the working electrode and the counter electrode to electrolyze the molten salt; and thereby oxidizing or reducing the dissolved ions to adjust the valence. The method also comprises arranging a reference electrode 5 and electrolyzing the molten salt while controlling a potential difference between the reference electrode and the acting electrode, thereby to more precisely adjust the valence.
