To increase the dehumidifying amount of a dehumidifier and to effectively defrost in a short time.
The dehumidifier has a throttle device 3 whose opening can be adjusted. In dehumidifying operation, the appropriate opening is maintained depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity during operation. In defrosting operation, the throttle device 3 is fully opened to reduce pressure losses, and a fan 5 is stopped to allow a high-temperature refrigerant gas to flow into an evaporator 5 for defrosting; also, the compressor 1 is stopped and heat stored in a condenser 2 is used for defrosting. Exiting air is also used for defrosting. Refrigerant is condensed by the evaporator 4 for defrosting. The surface temperature of the evaporator 4 is detected, and the defrosting operation is started after whether or not there is frost is determined according to the temperature. Depending on room temperature and the surface temperature of the evaporator, the composition of the defrosting operation is selected.
