To provide a method and an apparatus for designing a utility pole that are in accordance with actual facilities.

The utility pole designing apparatus is so designed as to compute the unbalanced load on a utility pole by displacement in the utility pole caused by the tension of a cable, when wind blows. The apparatus includes a displacement setting unit 11 that sets a temporary value as the displacement of a utility pole; a first arithmetic unit 12, that computes the load applied to the utility pole from the tension of a cable that enables displacement of the utility pole, set by the displacement setting unit 11; a second arithmetic unit 13, that computes the load applied to the utility pole from the relation between displacement and load, based on the displacement of the utility pole set by the displacement setting unit 11; a determination unit 14 that determines whether the difference between the load computed by the first arithmetic unit 12 and that computed by the second arithmetic unit 13 lies within a predetermined range; and when it is determined that the difference does not lie within the range, instructs the displacement setting unit 11 to set another temporary value; and an output unit 15 that when the determination unit 14 determines that the difference between the loads lies within the predetermined range, takes either of the loads as being the load applied to the utility pole.
