To provide a character recognition device having high accuracy and processing efficiency of character recognition, applying a correction process to a pseudo-half-tone image, and capable of performing the character recognition of a simple binary image as it is, in an input image wherein the pseudo-half-tone image and the simple binary image are mixed.
This character recognition device has: an image input means 2 optically reading a document 11 such as a paper surface, and converting it into an electric image; a decision means 4 deciding whether the image from the image input means 2 is the pseudo-half-tone image or not, in each prescribed area; a correction means 6 applying prescribed correction to the image to generate a correction image when the decision means 4 decides that it is the pseudo-half-tone image; a character recognition means 7 recognizing a character from the correction image generated by the correction means 6; a storage means 5 storing image data on the image, the correction image or the like; and a control means 3 controlling operation order and operation of the whole device.
