Japanese Patent JPS4533884
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1,205,676. Controlled reaction of metal with liquid. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 12 Jan., 1968 [23 Jan., 1967], No. 1973/68. Heading C1A. Sodium, potassium or lithium, or alloys thereof, or calcium are reacted with an aqueous liquid whose specific gravity is greater than that of the metal under a layer of liquid which is immiscible and does not react with the aqueous liquid and whose specific gravity is less than that of the metal and aqueous liquid. The metal is immersed in the reaction medium and the reaction between metal and liquid takes place at the interface between the two liquids. The inert liquid is preferably a hydrocarbon oil, and the aqueous liquid may be water, or an aqueous chloride, hydroxide or cyanide solution. The reaction is carried out at a temperature at which both layers remain liquid, preferably in the range 0‹ to 100‹ C. When the metal reacts with the aqueous liquid, hydrogen is formed which adheres to the surface of the metal and lifts the metal from the liquid interface, causing the reaction to cease. As the hydrogen disengages, the metal sinks back to the interface. In order to prevent explosive mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen forming above the surface of the inert liquid, the surface may be swept with air, or an atmosphere of an inert gas may be maintained above the surface. Examples describe the application of the process to the disposal of sodium from sodium-filled plastic tubes of the type used for electrical conduction, and the disposal of sodium sludge filter resulting from the manufacture of sodium by electrolysis of molten sodium chloride.
