Abstract:
Cephalosporanic acid derivs. of formula (I) (where R1 is H, lower hydroxyalkylthio or hetercyclylthio opt. substd. by lower alkyl or alkanoyloxyl-(lower alkyl); R2 is lower alkyl, (lower alkylthio)-(lower alkyl), acyl-(lower alkyl), acylamino- (lower alkyl), lower alkenyl, aryl-(lower alkenyl or lower alkynyl; R3 is H, lower alkyl or aryl; and X is S. SO or SO2; provided that R2 is not lower alkyl when R1 is H) (e.g. 7-(2 -methanesulphinyl-2-phenyl-acetamido)-3-(5-methyl-1, 3, 4 -thiadiazol-2-yl)thiomethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid) and their carboxy derivs. and pharmaceutically tolerable salts are new cpds. They may be prepd. by reacting a cpd. of formula (II) or a carboxy deriv. or salt thereof with a cpd. of the formula R2-X-CHR3-COOH (III) or with a carboxy deriv. or salt thereof. Further processes for preparing cpds. (I) in which R1 is a thio substituent are also claimed. (I) are antibacterials active against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
