PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a highly safe herbicide having excellent herbicidal activity on annual Gramineae weeds and annual broadleaf weeds and also having high selectivity on crops such as rice.
CONSTITUTION: This new compound us expressed by formula I (R1 us H or a l-4C alkyl-; R2 is OH or a halogen; R3 and R4 are each a 1-4C alkoxyl; R5 is H, benzyl, etc.; Z is methine or N atom), e.g. S-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2- yl)-2-(1-hydroxycycopentyl)thioglycolic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction between a compound of formula II and a cyclopentanone of formula III in a solvent such as THF in the presence of an organolithium compound such as butyllithium pref. in a nitrogen gas flow at -60 to 0°C for 1-3h. The compound of formula II is prepared, for example, by reaction between a thioglycolic ester and 4,6-dimethoxy-2-methylsulfonylpyrimidine in the presence of a base in a solvent.
