To obtain a new compound useful as a formaldehyde-free crosslinking agent for hydroxyl and/or amino-containing coating binder such as alkyd resin or polyester resin and capable of providing a coating film having large hardness and durability.
This compound is represented by formula I (X1 to X3 are each an amino, a 1-6C alkylamino, a hydroxy-1-6C alkylamino or the like), e.g. N-(4,4- diethoxybutyl)melamine. The compound is obtained by reacting cyanuric chloride with an amine of the formula NH2R4 {R4 is H or a group of formula II [R1 is H or a 1-6C alkyl; R2 and R3 are each a 1-6C alkyl; (n) is 1-5]. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent such as water or ether in the presence of a base, at pH 8-9. Furthermore, it is preferable that cyanuric chloride is reacted with ammonia to produce 2-amino-4,6-dichloro[1,3,5]triazine or 2,4- diamino-6-chloro[l,3,5]triazine and the resultant compound is reacted with an amine of formula III when one or two groups among X1 to X3 are amino groups.
