Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain activated carbon inexpensive and having high performance, and to provide a process for producing it and an application of the activated carbon to water treatment.
CONSTITUTION: This activated carbon has a specific surface area of ≥1300m2/g and a fine hole volume of ≥3.00ml/g. The activated carbon is produced by carbonizing sewage sludge and extracting inorganic material with an acid followed by an activation treatment. In the carbonization process, an alkali metal silicate optionally added as both an foaming agent and an activating agent. Sewage is treated with a circular-type nitrification-denitrification treatment and filtered through a sand bed. After the treatment, the sewage is passed through a vessel packed with the activated carbon. Sodium hydroxide can be used as the activating agent. For activation, the sludge may be heated at 350-450°C for a certain period of time followed by heating at 450-900°C for a certain period of time.
