To provide an alignment film which is excellent in a surface property and is also excellent in alignment control power for a liquid crystal material, and a coating composition which contains a hydrophilic solvent and forms a film of an excellent surface property.

The alignment film and the coating composition contain a fluoroaliphatic group-containing polymer represented by at least one kind of general formulas (1). In the formula, i, j and k indicate an integer ≥1, and i, j, and k kinds of repeating units are contained; M represents a repeating unit derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and l (l is an integer ≥1) kinds of repeating units are contained; and (a), b, c and d are mass percentages indicating a polymerization ratio.
