To provide an apparatus for detecting the amount of color shift, which detects relative amount of color shift in the main scanning direction between toner images of different colors with high precision and at a low cost, and to provide a method for detecting the amount of color shift.
The apparatus for detecting the amount of color shift includes: an image forming means 30 for forming a first pattern and a second pattern of a color different from the first pattern which relatively overlaps the first pattern in the main scanning direction on a recording medium; an image reading means 7 for generating first and second pattern image data showing first and second patterns; a density distribution determining means 90 for determining density distribution in the main scanning direction in the first and second pattern image data; a density ratio determining means 91 for determining the ratio of presence of the density equal to or higher than a first threshold value and less than a second threshold value which is larger than the first threshold, in the density distribution in the main scanning direction; and a color shift amount detection means 92 for detecting the relative amount of color shift in the main scanning direction of the first and second patterns form the absolute value of the difference between the determined ratio and a preset reference ratio.
