To effectively decompose ammonia at a low temperature range and reduce content of generating NOx by using an ammonia oxidizing and decomposing catalyst containing cobalt and either one or both of antimony and gallium.
Cobalt and antimony or gallium metals or their compounds are included into a carrier such as alumina, silica gel or the like by employing coprecipitation method or evaporation to dryness method. Then, this catalyst is burned in atmospheric air at a temperature of 100-600°C for a period of about 1-10 hours, as necessary. The catalyst thus obtained is charged into a fixed bed or fluidized be apparatus 3, into which coke oven gas generated from a coke oven and the like is introduced. This catalyst exhibits a remarkably high ammonia oxidizing and decomposing activity at such a low temperature as 400°C or lower and carries out decomposition of the ammonia without generation of NOx within a temperature range of not higher than 500°C.
