An article carrier 10 for a vehicle comprises a pair of side rails 16 and at least one adjustable cross bar 20. The cross bar 20 has a pair of bracket members 24 positioned in such a manner as to be freely adjusted along the side rails 16 at the outermost ends thereof. Each bracket member 24 has a rotating member 36 having a circumferential cam surface which comes into contact with the head part of a locking member 64. When the rotating member 36 is rotated in a first direction, the locking member 64 is energized by the cam surface to release the fastening and engagement with the related side rail 16. On the other hand, when the rotating member 36 is rotated in the opposite direction, the locking member 64 is energized by an energizing member 88 to fasten and engage the locking member 64 with the related side rail 16.
