Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an asphalt compsn. which is excellent in elongation at a low temp. and balance among other properties of asphalt, as well as in processability by mixing asphalt with a block copolymer having a specific structure.
SOLUTION: Asphalt in an amt. of 80 to 97wt.% is mixed with 3 to 20wt.% block copolymer PAB comprising a polymer block A comprising a monovinyl arom. compd. Vm and a random copolymer block B comprising Vm and a conjugated diene compd. The block copolymer PAB satisfies the following requirements: (a) the total bond Vm content is 20 to 40wt.%; (b) the A content is 10 to 35wt.%; (c) PAB has a structure represented by the formula, (A1-B)mX or (A1-B-A2)X (wherein X represents a tin halide residue; and m is 2 to 4) and such a GPC peak mol.wt. that the A1 peak mol.wt. is 5,000 to 30,000 and the A2 peak mol.wt. is not more than 10,000 with the A1 peak mol.wt. being larger than the A2 peak mol.wt.; (d) the GPC peak mol.wt. of PAB is 100,000 to 800,000; (e) the Vm content of the polymer block B is 11 to 31wt.%; and (f) the Vm chain distribution of the polymer block B is such that the content of a single chain is not less than 50wt.% and the content of a long chain of 8 or more Vms is not more than 15wt.%.
