To provide an automatic focusing device and a focusing method capable of focusing a subject having no high-frequency component in a horizontal direction without increasing a memory capacity or a circuit scale.
A digital video signal output from an A/D conversion circuit 7 is converted into a luminance signal in a luminance signal generation circuit 22. The luminance signal is rearranged so as to be scanned to include at least a part scanned zigzag in a luminance signal rearranging circuit 23. The luminance signal rearranged in the luminance signal rearranging circuit 23 is input in a band pass filter 24 so as to extract a contrast value. An AF evaluated value is arithmetically calculated in a cumulative adding circuit 25 based on the contrast value.
