To obtain a new compound high in bromide content and good in thermal stability by brominating a biphenylnovolak compound in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent by using a specific acid catalyst.
This brominated bipheylnovolak compound is a compound of formula I [R1 is a monovalent aromatic ring; Q1 is a divalent aromatic ring; (a), (b), (c) and (d) are each 0-4; (n) is 0-9] and having 20-70wt.% bromine content, e.g. the compound obtained by brominating a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting 100 pts.wt. biphenylnovolak of formula III (R is a monovalent aromatic ring; Q is a divalent aromatic ring) having 400-1000 average molecular weight with a brominating agent e.g. 60-480 pts.wt. Br in the presence of 1-20 pts.wt. Lewis acid such a AlBr3 as a catalyst based on 100 pts.wt. compound of formula III at a normal temperature under a normal pressure.
