Abstract:
To produce 2-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone useful as a production intermediate of vitamin Ks in high yield by an industrially advantageous method by oxidizing m-cresol by molecular oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst in a specified solvent.
Meta-cresol is oxidized by molecular oxygen regulated so that the partial pressure of the O2 may be ordinarily 1-20kg/cm2 by using a ketone- acetonitrile mixed solvent having 10-90wt.% ketone content regulated so that the weight ratio of the mixed solvent to the m-cresol may be 1-30, and further using a ferrous halide, e.g. Cu2Cl2 in an amount of 0.01-2.0mol per mol m-cresol at 0-50°C to provide the objective 2-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone.
