Fare data expressing the amount to be paid by a user and a recognition number are written in a magnetic card 4 and issued by a magnetic card issuing machine 200A. A traveled distance measuring instrument 2 outputs traveled distance data expressing the traveled distance of a bus 100. When the user gets on the bus, a fare computing element 1 reads the recognition number of that magnetic card 4 through a magnetic reader/writer 3 and stores it in a memory together with the traveled distance data at that time point. Besides, when the user gets off the bus, the recognition number and fare data of that magnetic card 4 are read, the traveled distance data in the memory corresponding to the relevant recognition number are subtracted from the traveled distance data at the current time point and based on this subtracted result, the bus fare is calculated. Then, new fare data, from which this bus fare is subtracted, are written in the magnetic card 4.
