To provide a carbonizer which performs the heating of the material to be treated so that the treatment time may be shortened or the electric consumption may be saved.
This carbonizer has a carbonization oven 14 having a heating source 20 which is composed of two separated upper and lower heaters 22 and 20. A temperature sensor 36 for detecting the temperature of the material to be treated is set on the lower part of the oven 14, and the heating source 20 is controlled according to the temperature detected with the sensor 36. It is desirable that the heating of the oven by means of the source 20 is stopped when the temperature detected with the sensor reaches a temperature near the spontaneous carbonization initiation temperature of the material.
