Title:
CATHODE FOR ELECTROLYSIS OF ALKALI CHLORIDES
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5497600
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain cathode capable of reducting electrolytic voltage for the diaphragm process electrolysis of an aqueous alkali chloride solution which consists of base plate, catalyst, and hydrophobic substance, having specific porosity, bore diameter, and gas transmittance(air). CONSTITUTION:A cathode for the electrolysis of alkali chlorides which consists of a Ni or carbon porous or netting base plate which is pervious to gas, a 0.5 to 100 mg/cm<2> catalyst(e.g., pt, Pd, etc.), and a 0.1 to 50 mg/cm<2> hydrophobic substance(e.g., PTFE, etc.,). And the cathode has an average bore diameter of 0.01 to 50 microns, a porosity of 50 to 95 %, and air transmittance of 1 X 10<-5> to 1 X 10<-1> mole/cm<2>.sec.cmHg. The cathode is manufactured by the procedure in which a catalyst powder is mixed with a hydrophobic substance to a slurry of paste, the mixed paste is then spread over the surface of a base plate, and then the base plate is heated until the hydrophobic substance is melted, followed by compression and cooling. Then, the cathode thus obtained is used as a porous cathode for the electrolysis of an aqueous alkali chloride solution while diffusion O2 into bores.
