PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To send/receive a character message in a transmission mode corresponding to the state of a user.
SOLUTION: This system consists of mobile terminals 5A, 5B connecting to a mobile communication network 4, an information terminal 3 for connecting to a computer network 2, and a server 1 for connecting to the mobile communication network and the computer network. The information terminal 3 is provided with state detection means 22, 23, 24 and detects an operating state, including a connection state of at least with the computer network to inform the server 1 of it. The server 1 is provided with state management means 8, 9 and a decision means 10. The state management means 8, 9 store an operating state of the information terminal 3 informed from the state detection means 24 for each user. The decision means 10 decides a transmission mode as to whether or not a character message is sent to the information terminal or whether or not a network application is used.
