EXAMPLE: 2-[p-(2'-Ethylhexyloxycarboxyloxy)phenyl]-5-(p'-octyloxyphenyl)- pyrimidine.
USE: A component for liquid crystal composition, a liquid crystal solution showing ferroelectricity, exhibiting a smectic C phase in a wide temperature range useful as an element material of optical switch, especially ferroelectric liquid crystal material.
PREPARATION: For example, a specific shown by formula II (p=n) is reacted with a compound shown by formula III in the presence of a base such as NaH to give a compound shown by a formula l wherein Y4 is -CH2O-.
