To provide a low-price display device, having high image quality which displays video signals with high resolution, using a liquid crystal panel of low resolution.
Two liquid crystal panels of one liquid crystal panel, which performs time-division display of R, G, B signals and one liquid crystal panel of W (white) pixels are used to optically composite images by arranging the basic pixels for the time-division display of R, G, B signals and the additional W pixels into the so-called quincunx pattern. The information with low resolution is displayed as a full color image by basic pixels, and as for the information with higher resolution, and only the luminance information is displayed by the white pixels composited by the time-division R, G, B signals and by the added W pixels.
