To provide a reader/writer, communication method, and program capable of achieving communication with an information processing apparatus, or as well as, power saving related to contactless communication.
The reader writer includes: a carrier signal generator for selectively generating a carrier signal; a detection signal generator for selectively generating a detection signal; a communication antenna to which the carrier signal or the detection signal is selectively transmitted; a status observation unit for outputting a first detection value, corresponding to a reference coil current flowing through a coil of the communication antenna when an information processor is not detected, based on an input of the detection signal; a switching unit for selectively transmitting the carrier signal or the detection signal, to the communication antenna and transmitting the detection signal to the status observation unit; a determination unit for determining whether the information processor is detected, based on the value of difference between the first detection value and a second detection value corresponding to a coil current flowing through the coil of the communication antenna; and a controller which makes the carrier signal or the detection signal to be selectively generated, based on the result of determination by the determination unit.
