To provide a ceramic/metal composite material having excellent abrasion resistance and heat resistance, and a method for manufacturing the ceramic/metal composite material easily and at a low cost.
The ceramic/metal composite material is manufactured by integrating a ceramic porous body with molten metal by a cast-in insertion process. The ceramic porous body consists of ceramics such as silicon carbide (SiC), alumina (Al2O3) and silicon nitride (Si3N4) which have a Vickers hardness HV of 800 or higher at a temperature of 500°C or higher. The metal material is melted at a temperature of 1,450°C or higher and poured into a mold in a molten state. The ceramic porous body and the metal are integrated into the composite material by a casting process. The ceramic/metal composite material is manufactured by placing the ceramic porous body consisting of SiC, Al2O3 and/or Si3N4 in the mold beforehand, and then, pouring the molten metal into the mold, under the pressure inside the mold being made lower than the atmospheric pressure.
