Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material unlikely to crack by preventing cracks and metal veins at the time of matrix infiltration; and a method for manufacturing the same.SOLUTION: The provided composite material is obtained by impregnating a preform 11 with a matrix 12 and comprises: a preform 11 comprising a porous body 13 formed by a boron carbide reinforcement and a sheet-shaped ceramic felt 14 formed by silicon carbide; and a matrix 12 including metallic silicon and charged into gaps of the preform 11. Cracks and metal veins accordingly become scarce at the time of the infiltration of the matrix 12, and cracks are unlikely to arise. Since the ceramic felt 14 is formed by non-oxide fibers made of a material having a high metallic silicon wettability, infiltration is not hindered at the time of preparation, and cracks are unlikely to arise.
