PURPOSE: To continuously produce the Zn-Mg ally plated steel strip having a specified compsn. by depositing Zn by evaporation on the surfaces of the steel strip with a Zn vapor deposition device having a specific construction, then depositing Mg by evaporation thereon with an arc vapor deposition device.
CONSTITUTION: The steel strip 1 subjected to a degreasing treatment is passed from a payoff reel 2 through a heating reduction furnace 3 where the oxide films and impurities on the surfaces are removed. The steel strip is then passed through a sealing device 5 into a vacuum chamber 4 where the steel strip is subjected successively to Zn vapor deposition and Mg vapor deposition to form the Zn-Mg alloy by the heat contained in the steel strip 1. The Zn vapor deposition device 7 is disposed with a crucible 10 contg. the Zn 9 on the outside of the vacuum chamber 4 and is mounted with a hood 11 thereon, the top end of which hood is disposed near the steel strip 1 passing the inside of the vacuum chamber 4. The width of the hood 11 is set smaller than the width of the steel strip 1 and the Zn is deposited by evaporation on the surfaces of the steel strip at the top end thereof. The Mg is then deposited by evaporation on the surfaces of the steel strip having the vapor deposited Zn layers by the Mg vapor deposition 8 equipped with the Mg 13 and an arc generator 12. The steel strip having the plating layers in the alloyed state of the Zn and the Mg is taken through a sealing device 5a to the outside.
