PURPOSE: A curable resin composition excellent in solubility in a solvent, heat resistance, etc., and suitable for use in a paint, etc., obtained by mixing a polycyanate ester (derivative) with an N-monoaminomaleimide and a prereaction product of an epoxy compound.

CONSTITUTION: The purpose curable resin composition is prepared by mixing a polycyanate ester of formula I (wherein m is 2W5, R1 is an aromatic group, and each cyanate group is bonded directly to the armatic ring of R1), e.g., 1,3-dicyanatobenzene, or a prepolymer of this ester, or a prepolymer of this ester with an amine with an N-monoaminomaleimide of formula II (wherein X1 and X2 are each H, a halogen, or a lower alkyl, R is polyvalent organic group, and n is 1W 5), e.g., 3-aminomaleimidobenzene) and a prereaction product of an epoxy compound (e.g., bisphenol glycidyl ether).
