To solve a problem where, although inputted data are required to be classified into appropriate categories, the categories are classifications required for an application, or types defined by a user, so that the distributions of the categories are partially overlapped depending on the inputted data, and the optimum classification can not be executed.
This data classification device is so structured that the number of classes and the number of dimensions are previously calculated in order to classify a model data group comprising a plurality of model data into classes of separated distributions; a class configuration is determined according to the number of classes and the number of dimensions having been obtained; the model data group is classified class-by-class; a representative value of each class is compared with inputted data to determine the class having a representative value having the highest degree of similarity; and the category of the inputted data is found by finding the category to which the determined class belongs.
