The device includes: a plurality of the still picture generating means for generating still pictures from a televised program; a program genre discrimination means for discriminating genres of the televised program; an assignment means for assigning a genre of the televised program to the still picture generating means by each program genre; and a storage means for storing the still pictures generated by the still picture generating means in cross-reference with the televised program. The device is characterized in that the program genre discrimination means discriminates the genre of the televised program, the determining means generates a representative still picture of the televised program by using the still picture generating means assigned to the program genre of the televised program by the assigning means on the basis of the discriminated program genre, and the storage means stores the representative still picture together with the televised program.
