Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable accurate switch operation by shifting 1st and 2nd electrodes in position from the centers of 1st and 2nd optical waveguides and weighting the coefficient of coupling between the 1st and 2nd optical waveguides with a distance. CONSTITUTION:The 1st and 2nd electrodes 15 and 16 are formed nearby the external surfaces of the optical waveguides 13 and 14 and a 3rd electrode 17 is formed on the reverse surface of a substrate 10; and the 1st and 2nd electrodes 15 and 16 are provided shifting in position from the centers of the optical waveguides 13 and 14. Then when a voltage V is impressed between the electrodes 16 and 17, an electric field 21 produced by the electrode 14 has a slanting component. Therefore, respective horizontal and vertical polarized light components in the characteristic mode of waveguide light are given electrooptic effect at the same time. Consequently, the high-accuracy optical switch which does not change in operation characteristics owing to polarization is obtained.
