PURPOSE:To obtain a distinct picture which moves at high speed, and also, to reduce the power consumption by varying the refractive index of a non-linear optical material of a picture element part in accordance with the strength of an applied electric field by a Pockels effect, and adjusting output light intensity corresponding to each picture element part outputted from an analyzer. CONSTITUTION:When an electric field corresponding to an input signal whose strength is controlled is applied to each picture element part G formed on a non-linear optical layer 1, the prescribed component of a refractive index sensor of its picture element part G is varied in accordance with the applied electric field by what is called a Pockels effect in a secondary non-linear optical effect. Subsequently, when a linearly polarized light which is made incident from a polarizer 3 advances into the respective picture element parts G, the plane of polarization rotates in accordance with the variation of the refractive index of the picture element part G, and the polarized light becomes an elliptic polarization. Next, based on the applied electric field, the ratio of the polarized light component for constituting the elliptic polarization is varied, and the light quantity of a specific polarized light component which can transmit through an analyzer 4 is varied. In such a manner, the response speed to an input signal becomes high, and an image display whose power consumption is small can be attained.
