A light source unit 11 includes a plurality of light emitting elements 11B, 11R, 11G for emitting illumination light beams B, R, G, respectively. A composition unit 12 combines the plurality of illumination light beams B, R, G. The illumination light beams B, R, G combined by the composition unit 12 are projected onto a display panel 14. The light source unit 11 includes the first light emitting elements 11B for emitting the first light beams B having a first color, the second light emitting elements 11R for emitting the second light beams R having a second color, and the third light emitting elements 11G for emitting the third illumination light beams G having a third color, the third light emitting elements 11G having higher luminance than the first and second light emitting elements, 11B and 11R. The composition unit 12 includes optical elements 12c for transmitting or reflecting the third illumination light beams G and for reflecting or transmitting the first and second illumination light beams B and R.
