PURPOSE: To rapidly and stably control light transmission or light reflection by impressing a positive or negative voltage to one of two electrodes on one plate and earthing the other electrode and a transparent electrode on the other plate to form a stopping operation state.
CONSTITUTION: In a liquid crystal cell 1, ferroelectric liquid crystal is held between one plate 2 having two electrodes 5, 6 on both the sides of a main electrode 9 and the other plate 3 having at least one electrode 7 on a main electrode 10, a positive or negative voltage is impressed to one of the two electrodes 5, 6 on the plate 2 and the other electrode and the transparent electrode 7 on the other plate 3 are earthed to make the cell 1 a stopping operation state. After said operation, a negative or positive voltage is impressed to one electrode under a condition for equalizing the quantity of electrostatic charge to make the cell 1 a light shading state. Consequently, a light transmitting part and a light untransmitting part can be formed on the same cell at an optional ratio and light transmission or light reflection can be stably controlled.
