This EL drive circuit system 320 is provided with a control block 330 at the front stage of an EL driving circuit 102, a time-division-driven timer 332, an oscillating circuit 334 oscillating according to the electric capacity of an EL element 205 in a luminescence-off period, a counter 335 measuring the oscillation frequency, a latch circuit 336 latching the result, a PROM 337 recording the EL drive circuit voltage having the time series wave-form corresponding to the output frequency of the latch circuit 336 in advance, and a D/A converter 338. The luminance of the EL element 205 is flexibly controlled in response to the ambient light and darkness.
