Title:
ELECTROLYTIC CELL USING ION-EXCHANGE MEMBRANE
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS58133386
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the electrolytic cell whose voltage can be rapidly raised and which is easily constructed, by laying an ion-conductive nonporous film on the surface of an ion-exchange membrane fronting a cathode interposed between the anodic and cathodic chambers of vertical-type electrolytic cell for electrolyzing an aqueous alkali chloride solution. CONSTITUTION:Anodic and cathodic chambers 4, 9 are formed in the interiors of anodic and cathodic frames 1, 5 with gas-permeable anode plates 2, 3 and cathode plates 6, 7, respectively. A nonporous film 11 having ion conductivity is laid on the surface of a cation-exchange membrane 10 at the side of the cathode and clamped in a sealed state between the frames 1 and 5 through gaskets 12. All of the anodes 2, 3, the membrane 10, the film 11 and the cathode 6 are stuch fast to each other by the pressure of an elastic body 8 composed of cathodic substance. According to this electrolytic cell, H2 gas formed at the side of the cathode rapidly rises as bubbles without adhesion to the membrane, so that electrolysis with low voltage can be performed without the interception of an electric current caused by the gas bubbles.
