Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide an optical switching element which can suppress the transmission loss of light and increase the light-dark contrast ratio of emitted light.
CONSTITUTION: This element has a liquid crystal layer 113, electrodes 105 and 107 which form at least one boundary surface 201 different in refractive index from an adjacent area by impressing an electric field to the liquid crystal layer 113, a control means which controls the intensity of the electric field of the electrodes 105 and 107 and the electric field application timing, and a light guide-in means which guides light in the border surface 201; and the border surface 201 is so formed as the reflect the light in by the light guide-in means to a specific position, and the control means is controlled to reflect and guide out the light guided in by the light guide-in means at necessary timing with necessary intensity, thereby obtaining a light/dark binary state.
