To reduce size of an elevator shaft by providing size reducing effect for the elevator shaft in two stages by combining constitution of a pair of first guide rails disposed roughly at diagonal positions over a car with constitution of a flat rope having a flat cross sectional form as a drive rope.
The car 8 is guided through the first guide rails 3a and 3b over the car 8 to be capable of elevating, and a counterweight 5 is guided by a pair of second guide rails 4a and 4b over the counterweight 5 to be capable of elevating. A drive rope 7 linking the car 8 to the counterweight 5 is wound around a drive sheave 10a of a winding device 10, so that the drive sheave 10a is driven to rotate for moving the car 8 and the counterweight 5 to elevate in the opposite directions to each other in this elevator. The first guide rails 3a and 3b are disposed roughly at diagonal positions over the car 8.
