PURPOSE: To improve the reliability of radiation image erasure by detecting the output energy of an energy generating means for erasing a radiation image recorded on a memory type phosphor.
CONSTITUTION: Plural rod type light sources 17 are arranged so that their lengthwise direction crosses the moving direction of the phosphor SP at right angles, and the light sources 17 are turned on to erase the image while the phosphor SP is inserted into a case completely. A photoelectric converting element 21 such as a photodiode is provided opposite the light sources 17 freely movably along the array direction of the light sources 17. The output of the photoelectric converting element 21 is applied to a processor 23 and compared with a reference value at the position of each light source 17. When the output is larger than a reference value, the light source 17 is normal, so irradiation for exposure is performed for a set time to complete the erasure. When the output of a light source 17 is deficient, an erasure time is extended to secure the quantity of exposure necessary for the exposure, thereby improving the reliability.
