Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new ethynylbenzene derivative useful as a synthetic intermediate for liquid crystal compounds useful as an electrooptical display material, especially a tolan-based liquid crystal compound.
CONSTITUTION: This ethynylbenzene derivative of formula I (X is F, Cl, trifluoromethyl or trifluoromethoxy), e.g. 1-ethynyl-3,4,5-trifluorobenzene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III (Z1 is I or Br) with a compound of formula IV in the presence of a catalyst of copper and palladium, providing a compound of formula V and then reacting the resultant compound of formula V with a strong base such as sodium hydride. This compound of formula I is allowed to react with a compound of formula VI (Z2 is I or Br) to afford a liquid crystal compound of formula II. The yield of the compound of formula II is remarkably increased by using the synthetic intermediate of formula I. Furthermore, the compound of formula II having various alkyl groups can readily be synthesized. Thereby, this method is extremely efficient.
