Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a small-size Faraday rotator having a large rotation angle.
CONSTITUTION: This Faraday rotator consists of a combination of a garnet material expressed by BixPyQ3-x-yFe5-wMwO12 and a magnet 2 to apply a magnetic field smaller than the saturation field of the garnet material. In formula, P is one or more elements selected from Y, La, Sm, Eu, Tm, Yb, and Lu, Q is one or more elements from Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er, M is one or more elements which can be substituted with Fe, and x, y, w satisfy 0.7≤x≤2.0, 0.5≤y≤2.3, 0≤3-x-y≤1, and 0.5≤w≤1.0. This rotator has the following features. (1) It shows small temp. variation in the Faraday rotation angle. (2) It shows large Faraday rotation since the material contains large amt. of substd. Bi, and thereby, the material can be made thin and easily produced by LPE method. (3) It has small saturation magnetization, which requires a small magnetic field to magnetize the garnet and the magnet can be minimized.
