To solve a problem of a drawback in which a photocatalytic material is expensive since titanium is a main raw material though in a TiO2 photocatalyst, a wide development study is carried out, practical use progresses and also a new material exhibiting a photocatalytic function without irradiating an ultraviolet ray is proposed from its excellent effect of environmental improvement and conservation.
It was found that an iron oxide a large amount of which is included in slag inevitably generated in ordinary steel production as a by-product is a metal deficiency oxide having a composition of FeXO(X<1) and p-type semiconductor character. Further, it was confirmed to include a photocatalytic effect without irradiating the ultraviolet ray. An inexpensive material is obtained which has the photocatalytic function without irradiating the ultraviolet ray.
