A method and a device provide the technique for adjusting the grid tracking and a character composition and include a computer program product to be used. A grid determining a layout of a single or more lines composed of grid boxes is received. Each grid box can store a single full-width character and has a global tracking amount specified by an absolute unit. The single or more out of the grid box are assigned to the character or a space related thereto. The characters and spaces related thereto on a single or more lines composed of the grid boxes are tracked by an amount determined as the ratio of em (full size width) to the character or the space related thereto and a function of the global tracking amount.
