To properly switch cursor moving operation and handwriting input operation on a display screen by using a touch pad in electronic information equipment such as a personal computer.
When a prescribed area on the upper right corner of a touch pad which can not be touched by a finger tip is touched by a pen and the coordinate data of the touched position are detected, a control part (CPU) is set up to a handwriting recognition mode, the locus of coordinate data detected by the touch pad 3 is successively stored in a detected coordinate memory and a handwritten character or mark is recognized in accordance with the locus of the coordinate data. In a normal input mode in which the prescribed area on the touch pad 3 is not touched by the pen, the moving position of a cursor displayed on a liquid crystal display part 4 is controlled relatively corresponding to coordinate data detected by the touch pad 3.
