This hierarchy processing device is provided with: a data input means 1 inputting pattern data of a predetermined hierarchy level in time-series; a computing characteristic control data memory 8 holding computing characteristic control data; a local area recognition module 3 detecting predetermined characteristics on the pattern data by using the computing characteristic control data; an intermediate processing result storage module 4 intermediately holding an output from the local area recognition module 3; and a control means 6 performing control so that an input from the data input means or an intermediate result fed back from the intermediate processing result storage module 4 and the computing characteristic control data read from the computing characteristic control data memory 8 are fed to the local area recognition module 3 according to the processing hierarchy level.
