To provide a method for obtaining a high-purity aromatic dihydroxy compound, by treating a waste aromatic polycarbonate (including an aromatic polycarbonate product, such as a CD, a CD-ROM, and a DVD, which becomes useless) at a low cost in a large amount.
This method for obtaining the aromatic dihydroxy compound from the waste aromatic polycarbonate includes (A) a process (process-a) for subjecting the waste aromatic polycarbonate to decomposition reaction by transesterification reaction in the presence of a 1-4C alcohol, an organic solvent of a chlorinated compound, and a metal hydroxide, (B) a process (process-b) for adding an aqueous acid solution to the reaction solution after the decomposition reaction, (C) a process (process-c) for separating an organic solvent phase from an aqueous solution phase and recovering the organic solvent phase, and (D) a process (process-d) for obtaining the solid aromatic dihydroxy compound from the recovered organic solvent phase, wherein the method further has a process (process-z) for filtering at least one of solution selected from a group consisting of the reaction solution after the decomposition reaction which is obtained in the process-a, the solution which is obtained in the process-b and to which the aqueous acid solution is added, and the recovered organic solvent solution which is obtained in the process-c.
