PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject element having excellent luminous efficiency, enabling luminescence of high brightness, by adding a specific compound to a luminous layer.
SOLUTION: This element is constituted by holding at least one luminous layer containing at least one dibenzo[f,f']diindeno[1,2,3-cd:1',2',3'-lm]perylene derivative between a pair of electrodes. In this case, a compound of formula I (X1 to X20 are each H, a halogen, an alkyl, etc.) is preferable as the perylene derivative. For example, a compound of formula II, a compound of formula III, etc., may be cited as the compound. Preferably a luminous layer containing the perylene derivative further contains a luminous organic metal complex such as tris(8-quinolinolate) aluminum. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula IV with a compound of formula V in the presence of aluminum chloride/sodium chloride or cobalt fluoride. Consequently an element having high brightness and excellent durability and luminous in orange to red can be obtained.
